We run on...

COFFEE!!!
Every morning, whether it's 5:20am or 7:30am our little coffee pot kicks on and starts brewing. It’s to the point that we actually fear going to work without coffee, fearing that it may affect our performance, which a) we're pretty sure meets criteria for dependence and/or addiction and b) is probably similar language to how other people (rock stars, actors, investment bankers) talk about things like cocaine. “It’s totally harmless, helps me start my day, and I need it; it really does help!” Otherwise, around noon we are no longer functioning human beings.

Juuuust enough caffeine. (Courtesy of Wikipedia.)

According to Yerkes-Dodson's law there is a bell-shaped curve where you plot arousal and performance. Of course, having a bell curve means that we’re bound to overdose at some point, leading the shaky-jittery shoot-I’m-drinking-this-on-an-empty-stomach mode.
Cheers!

Just one cup to start your day isn't bad! If I was drinking coffee at 5:30, I'd have to have another cup by 11 am or else I'd hit a wall. :/
